Choose the dot shape and grid
Circles are the classic newsprint look; lines give an engraved feel. Cell size sets how coarse the pattern is, and the angle rotates the whole grid — 45° is the traditional choice for a single ink.
Tune the tone
Brightness and contrast reshape which areas get big dots. Push dot size past 100% to let dots overlap into solid blacks, or invert to grow the dots towards the highlights instead.
Export PNG or SVG
PNG comes out at the original resolution with the grid scaled to match the preview. SVG writes every dot as a real vector shape you can open in Illustrator or hand to a print shop.
Frequently asked questions
What is a halftone, and what is it for?
A halftone reproduces continuous tones with a grid of solid dots that change size — the trick that lets a press carrying one flat ink print a photograph. It is still used for that reason, and just as often for the look: newsprint, comics, risograph and screen-printed posters.
Why would I export the halftone as SVG?
Because the dots stay real vector shapes. Screen printing, vinyl cutting and pen plotters want paths rather than pixels, and a vector file scales to poster size without the dots going soft. You can also open the SVG in Illustrator or Inkscape to recolour it or edit individual dots.
Is there a limit on image size?
The PNG renders at the original resolution up to 6,000 px on the longest side; anything bigger is scaled to that cap so the browser does not run out of memory mid-export. Nothing else is capped — no watermark, no sign-up, no export count.
Why is the SVG button sometimes disabled?
Every dot becomes one element in the SVG file. A fine grid can reach hundreds of thousands of them, which produces a file no editor opens comfortably, so the button switches off above 60,000 shapes. Raising the cell size by a few pixels usually brings it well under.
What cell size should I pick?
It depends on viewing distance. Large cells from about 20 px read as a deliberate graphic pattern even up close, while 4–8 px blends back into a photograph at arm’s length. For print, err on the coarse side — dots much below a third of a millimetre tend to fill in on paper.
Does my photo get sent anywhere?
No. The image is decoded, measured and redrawn entirely by your browser, and both exports are built on your device. There is no upload step, no account, and nothing is stored anywhere.
